Explanation: “Disobedience I” explores the traces of emotion inscribed onto fabric through the pressure of the brush and repetitive gestures. Using paint as a medium, I repeatedly rubbed and pressed the brush against the fabric, allowing physical movement and accumulated marks to record my emotional state. Through photography and performance, I investigate how bodily sensations and internal emotions can be translated into material traces.

The repetitive actions of brushing, rubbing, and pressing reflect my attempt to confront anxiety and the tendency to remain within familiar structures of comfort and stability. Rather than following a predetermined or “safe” path, the performance embraces repetition as a form of resistance—a physical act of disobedience against restraint and self-imposed limitations.

The work is also connected to my ongoing exploration of self-identity and interiority. As a Korean artist, I have become increasingly aware of my tendency to avoid risk and choose what feels secure. This personal inclination is considered alongside cultural memories and emotional structures embedded within Korean society.

In this context, I draw upon the Korean concept of Han (한), a complex emotional condition associated with sorrow, endurance, and unresolved feeling accumulated through personal and collective histories. In “Disobedience I,” Han is expressed not through a literal narrative, but through the accumulation of physical gestures and traces. The marks left by the paint become records of tension, resistance, and emotion—transforming an internal experience into a visible material form.
