“Banana?”
Year: 2022
Material: Performance based Photography
Description: Yellow explores body movement and gesture through the colour yellow. The performance playfully confronts the racist term “banana,” a derogatory expression used to describe Asian people who are perceived as culturally Westernized. Through impulsive and exaggerated bodily movements, I explore the tension between cultural identity, external perception, and internal stress.
By approaching the term through humour and physical performance, I transform an uncomfortable racialized label into a playful act of self-examination. The colour yellow becomes both a visual and conceptual device through which I question how identity is perceived, categorized, and performed. Through movement, I externalize feelings of stress and discomfort while exploring the possibility of reclaiming an imposed identity through humour, irony, and bodily expression.
