Artist Biography

Nayeon (Michelle) Hong (b.2000) is a visual artist based between Korea and Vancouver, Canada. Her practice explores themes of identity and inner anxiety through performance, photography, and ceramics, translating personal emotions into broader social contexts. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver. Drawing from the tensions and dissonance of navigating two cultural environments, her work investigates the boundaries of self and identity, giving them form through artistic language. Her notable performances Disobedience I (2024) and Disobedience II (2025) were presented at Place des Arts Heritage Gallery in Coquitlam and Space Sopora in Seoul. In Disobedience II, she explores the Korean sentiment of Han by throwing ceramic vessels, amplifying tactile experiences—texture, warmth, roughness, and softness—and transforming them into traces of emotional release. Hong has also participated in the KPCA Art Contest and showcased ceramic sculptures in RoRo’s Pottery Club group exhibition in Seoul.

홍나연 (Nayeon (Michelle) Hong, b.2000) 은 한국과 캐나다 밴쿠버를 오가며 활동하는 시각 예술가이다. 그녀는 정체성과 내면의 불안을 핵심 주제로 삼아 퍼포먼스, 사진, 도자 작업 등 다양한 매체를 통해 표현의 영역을 확장하고 있다. 캐나다 밴쿠버의 에밀리 카 예술대학교(Emily Carr University of Art + Design)에서 순수미술 학사 학위를 취득하였다. 
홍나연의 작업은 내면에 잠재된 불안감을 시각화하고 실재화하는 데 초점을 둔다. 한국과 캐나다라는 서로 다른 문화적 맥락 속에서 경험하는 혼란과 긴장을 바탕으로, 자아와 정체성의 경계를 탐구하며 이를 예술적 언어로 형상화한다. 
대표작으로는 퍼포먼스 작품 《불복종 I》(2024), 《불복종 II》(2025)가 있으며, 해당 작업은 캐나다 코퀴틀람 Place des Arts 헤리티지 갤러리와 2025 오퍼스 아트페어: 스페이스 소포라에서 전시되었다. 또한 한국미술서예협회(KPCA) 공모전에 참여하였고, 서울에서 열린 RoRo’s Pottery Club 그룹전에서 도자 조각 작업을 선보였다.
